First Sunrise of 2012

Before dawn I went to Plum Island in Newbury, Massachusetts where I could watch the sun rise over the Atlantic Ocean for the first time this year.  It was a clear sky morning and the temperature was a comfortable 33 degrees.  While waiting for the sun to rise, a group of guys walked briskly onto the beach and stopped at the shore’s edge.  They quickly took off their sweat pants and sweatshirts.  And then without adieu, charged into the ocean and dove into the cold water.  After watching their exuberance of having completed a rite of passage into the new year, the sunrise was actually a little anti-climatic.

Along with the intrepid swimmers, many people were on the beach this morning to see the first sunrise in their own way; jogging, walking, and sitting quietly waiting for the fresh start to begin.  The sun came up on schedule at 7:14am, and soon we were on our way to the next thing on this first day of 2012.
